Panic at the Disco discuss other Pretty. Odd. influences

Enough with the Beatles comparisons! RollingStone.com has a flipbook that takes a look at other elements of music and pop culture that played a part in the creation of Panic at the Disco's Pretty. Odd. Among them are Bob Dylan, Alice in Wonderland, Irish folk music, renaissance faires and Federico Fellini. OK, and they include the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's album, but that warrants a big fat "thank you, captain obvious!" at this point.

On that note, I think I finally found one thing I liked better about A Fever You Can't Sweat Out — the Chuck Palahniuk references. I understood them.

I see the point that Panic might open fans up to new interests (I know a lot of fans got turned on to Palahniuk because of Fever's littering of references), I just don't see myself deliving into Irish folk music or attending renaissance faires anytime soon. Or watching "A Clockwork Orange," for that matter — I despise that movie.

What about you? Have you ever checked out something because it was referenced in an album? Do you think Pretty. Odd. will expand your interests at all?

What did? Clockwork?

Are they even capable of creating music that isn't completely based on some sort of other inspiration? Gosh. But thanks for this. I'll let go of the Beatles comparison thing.

well i definitely watched a clockwork orange after panic, and a sound of music!!

i'm not sure how far i'd go with it though, like the books and stuff, i mean i might check them out one day but im not in any hurry.

one thing i do know, though, is that panic have influenced the music i listen to. they covered smashing pumpkins and radiohead when i saw them a couple of years ago, so i went home and checked them out and fell in love. i heard how much ryan loved counting crows so i checked them out too and now they're one of my favourite bands.

they also changed the way i look at music too. its not just something i listen to antmore, i apprieciate it more and been inspired to pick up more instuments and play them.

you know, i think id go as far as to say panic at the disco have changed my life.

I have checked out other types of music I hadn't before known about because someone mentioned it simply because I love all music. A lot of people say that and it might be true but for me it's more about understanding music as a whole. And I don't think Pretty. Odd. will expand my musical horizon as it's pretty broad already. But I'm glad someone else finally stated that the album is not just a Beatles rip off. I only heard a few things that made me think of them...other than that a lot of it sounded like a 1920's saloon, honestly. I loved it.

a little less chuck palahniuk, a little more mccartney and lennon

i'd heard of chuck p and his work before but i actually picked up invisible monsters after a friend suggested it. about halfway through it i finally caught on that panic! songs were referencing it.

i actually kind of like the new album
although i'm VERY interested to see how they're going to combine new and old songs in their set list now. hmmmm...

Good point. If they do the whole "nature" theme, will the Fever songs translate? Hmm

That is a very good point! I'd like to see that!

I actually am guilty of buying two Chuck Pahlaniuk books recently...thank you, Fever!
i don't think anyone should feel the need to say they're "guilty" or buying Chucks books. He's a great author and by Panic using slight refs. of his work in their songs, I think it's great that others who may have only read music magazines or gossip girl, are picking up books with a little more substance. Just my opinion of course. If you like chuck, read Vladimir Nabokovs Lolita. Or the actual book of a Clockwork Orange which is also a fantastic read.

I love this album. It is really getting me ready for summer. There's just a good vibe. It will definitely open my horizons to music like it. But that's the beauty in music. Everything leads somewhere else.

I didn't mean guilty as in "guilty as charged," but as in just admitting that I did it. In the slightly sarcastic use of the word...

haha well, either way. :P just saying though, I think it's great when artists can get others interested in things they may not have normally been into.

yep i think we all do it once in our lives, just to expand our "music culture" (or well that's what i think) but yeah as you say i don't see myself into irish folk music (or maybe... someday i'll give it a try)
whooa i didn't knew Bob Dylan influenced them, that's awesome, cause i admire bob dylan's music, though i miss his show in my town...
kristendawn: 03/26/2008 4:08 PM
Yeah i have already. I love the beatles now, for the past month, and im planning on going to a bob dylan concert later too.
