Panic at the Disco Shrug Off Poor Sales of 'Pretty. Odd.'

It's a disorienting time in the music industry. Panic at the Disco's sophomore album, Pretty. Odd., has gotten positive reviews all around, but it's not exactly ruling the charts.

"It's really hard to judge how the album is doing based on record sales, you know?" guitarist Ryan Ross recently told MTV News. "We look at that, and we don't really know what that even means. All we can go off is being on [the Honda Civic Tour] and seeing that people are getting into the new stuff, and that's the only way we can tell firsthand if things are going well or not."

Hear that? RyRo wants to see your singing, smiling faces —not your money. OK, maybe some of your money.

"It's a really weird time for music, and it's hard to tell where you stand, and all the things that used to tell you about your band have kind of gone away. So how you perceive yourself has changed," the often-mum drummer Spencer Smith added. "Luckily for us, rock bands have always been about playing live, [which is] good for us, because we're a real band who plays our own instruments, so we love being able to do it. And luckily that's always going to be there, because you can't download the concert ticket."

Aaaaactually, Mr. Smith, I have downloaded a concert ticket before. It just wasn't free, obviously. Just sayin'.

I, personally, think a band should measure its success on the general public's ability to play "finish the lyrics." Or have some sort of worldwide alert system for every time a lyric is referenced in a fan fiction or in the creation of a screen name or ... well, you get the idea. Something to prove the music has permeated a brain or 10, not just chilled as sweet frappucino coasters on various IKEA coffee tables.

Brush your teefs and get your warbling pipes ready if the HCT has yet to hit your hometown!

They might not be selling many albums, but it's definitely a good one. I just wish they were coming closer to where I live though, Atlanta is a bit of a drive.

Fever sold like crazy and they hated it and felt like they were getting more compliments on their looks than their music.

Pretty. Odd. is doing "poorly" but they're much happier with it and are a stronger live show now.

I think they did what they intended.

I think its just doing poorly because people can't accept/aren't ready for the change. But I'm personally excited for HCT:D

Pretty Odd is amazing. The only reason it isn't selling as well as Fever is that those dumb kids who love music about sorrow, death, pain, blood, and suicide-"emo" kids in other words, and listen to nothing else heard "Nine In the Afternoon" and decided that 'feeling so good' is something out of their comfort zone therefore it's bad music. OMG that was a long sentence. Anyway, I go to school with a bunch of these assholes, and people with generally bad taste are the reason for this album not getting the love it deserves. Every time I listen to it I'm reminded why I love this band. They can write songs like crazy!! People with taste (not fad-followers, posers, or the kids that are looking for attention through pretending their lives are miserable) will continue to listen to Panic at the Disco because the initial charm is still there. It won't ever leave. Bottom line, this band has nothing to sweat about.
The only reason I could guess why P.O. is selling poorly is because of illegal/p2p/torrent downloads, because I haven't been able to escape it since it came out, tbh. But I think bands make more money on touring than record sales, anyways. So. Yeah. Heh. :)
Good Point! =]

there are a lot of reason but yes they are happy with the music that they are making so thats good to the band, in the other hand, they probably will down for the selling poorly, for me they are still great, different style, but great as always, i bought the album and i know all the new songs, but its difficult for me see they alive cause they probably wont come to my country colombia, im still hoping that day

I think it was because there were a ton of free download links. I personally did not dish out $50 for the CD and stuck with the digital copy.
And how is it a weird time in music?! The music scene is always changing!

i dissagree. i heard bad reviews from people who are happy, and love music about happiness. yet thought this sucked. i heard bad reviews from people who love somewhat there kind of music. i dont think people dont like it because they are sticking to there "emo" scenes (which is really stereotypical as i might add) because there are alot more people who listen to music than those "emo" people.
there could be other reasons. like the other people are saying, everybody could be doing illegal downloading of thier CD, yet they arent doing that for the other people on the top 100, just them. just them because there CD is selling horribly. nobody wanted to download rihanna's or madonna's or leona lewis's CD (whose CDs are selling really well)

i loved the album, and honda civic tour was awesome!
i actually wished they had played even more from the new album. there were people at the show, however, that did say that they had only heard one song of the new album and weren't even aware the new album was out until hearing nine in the afternoon on the radio!!! i was pretty. shocked.
then again, i am the type to pre-order everything... and i definitely prefer owning the actual cd to downloading it, for some reason.. i guess it just is more tangible that way, and since music is so important to me, i like the feel of owning it.
it's really hard to measure success based on record sales, i agree. with all the people downloading it it's pretty much impossible to tell.
i buy the cd's because if the bands put it out there for me to listen, it is the least i can do to pay a few dollars as a way of thanking them... for infinite enjoyment (: although when it comes down to it, the live shows are what i love the most.

You know I am glad the guy's did not stick to doing the same thing again. Because despite poor sales, I think the album is total masterpiece because there alot of great song's in there show how much they mature.
I mean come on if someone made the same thing I would be just bored
