A Groupie Is...?

There so many good things in the July issue of Alt Press, I didn't know what to share. But then I got to page 128, "22 Music-Centric Books" and saw that Pamela DesBarres groupie memoir topped the list:

Then I went and flipped back through my Nylon mag and indeed, the groupie godmother is putting out another book:

I bring these books, or rather, this topic up because I want to know what your idea of a groupie is. I'm not gonna get on my soapbox for this one, because I already spent a quarter of my college life doing at 25 page paper on the derogatory nature of the word groupie... all because of this shirt, which was being sold in Hot Topic at the time:

So what do you think? Is a groupie just a promiscuous girl with goals, or just someone who gives genuinely dedicated fans another obstacle to overcome? Know any guys who've ever been called a groupie?

A Groupie is...

Dictionary.com says the definition is simply: 1. a young person, esp. a teenage girl, who is an ardent admirer of rock musicians and may follow them on tour OR an ardent fan of a celebrity or of a particular activity: a tennis groupie.

But the G-word has implied meanings as well. What do you think it means?

	limare: 05/31/2007 3:34 PM I see groupies as chicks who aren't even into the band or their music, their just their for the desire for the celebrity world of whoever they are pursuing is in, for the money, and hell whatever else they can get from screwing guys in bands or other musicians, I say guys because I myself have never really thought of men as groupies, but I guess it's possible. What dictonary.com describes as groupie I see as fan, I just automatically equate groupie with involving sexual favors and stuff, trying to get backstage by offering the roadies "things"....the end goal being to be a celebrity, the wife of a rockstar, but not for the love of his music and talent, for the love of his money and lifestyle :P
