Rescued By Patrick Stump: A Day On The Set Of "What A Catch, Donnie"

By now many of you have read Richard's recount of our day as extras in the Fall Out Boy music video shoot.

Richard had never been to a music video shoot before, but I have. Maybe I should've told him there are often long, long hours involved. But then he would've said no and would not have gotten to fake-party with Brendon Urie, which was probably his secret dream come true.

ANYWAY. So 40-some FOB fans gathered in all black clothing, as directed, at this port in San Pedro. We basically waited around for a few hours, I got sunburned, I overhead some peculiar fanatical conversations, and Nicole came over every once in awhile to keep me entertained. Andy Hurley was lurking and taking panoramic pics, then came over and chatted with some of us.

Some girls (and I say girls because there were only like, 9 guys) choose some interesting ensembles. The only directive was to wear all black, white black, white or red as an accent. There were a lot of dresses and precariously high heels.

When I took this picture they were like OK WHO TOOK A PICTURE OF THE  BOAT? But I was totally just taking a pic of them getting interviewed, so I didn't own up. You can't even see anything cool in this shot, anyway.

Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith showed up, even though the second assistant directed had been saying "Brendon and Travis" earlier.

Pete bailed out after his scene was done. He posted this pic on his blog:

hero lives. the villain? “what a catch vid on the: H.M.S. “roberta Flack”

We catch a glimpse of a coffin and some flowers later that night, so this post makes me think Pete dies.

It was cold, so I got my jacket out of the car. Luckily, my jacket is GRAY!

So it was time to get on the boat. After some time standing around Patrick, they asked which four of us wanted to be brave and climb inside the boat from the outside. 3 girls volunteered. They said, "one more!" and me and this other girl start going for it. They're like, "whoever gets there first gets it!" and then I found myself hurtling myself over the edge and placing my foot down first. Pretty sure that's why I have a fat bruise on the inside of my thigh today. That, or the other 8 times I climbed over.

We got "rescued" by Patrick, which required us to also ACTUALLY climb from a lifeboat into the real boat (twice), for the sake of shooting angles.

I'm pretty sure I look like a large, gray, ungraceful marshmallow, but whatthehell. A girl only gets one chance to get rescued by a man of such talent. Or about 10 chances, if you count all the takes.

Joe, Andy, Spencer and Brendon get rescued the same way we do, too. Except one time the rescue fails, and Brendon Urie falls in the water.

Once he gets out, half his body soaking wet, he shouts "YO THIS SHIT JUST GOT REAL!" hahahah. As he's shaking off, he claims he's a method actor and has to get completely into character. People are still giggling. The crew makes jokes about him the rest of the evening. ("Someone hold Brendon's hand so he doesn't fall!")

Of course, I wouldn't be talking like this if I had fallen in, which I almost did if two buff dudes didn't like, catch me mid-air. I should've shouted "WHAT A CATCH!" but mostly I just whispered thanks and shakily walked towards my other new "rescued" friends.

Then it's party time, because we're all alive. I get a fake cup and some of us go up to the... er, top part of the ship to celebrate life. They send Brendon up there with us and we all "na na na na na" and wave cups and some of the girls get all sexy dancing-like, which I couldn't convince myself to do because the song didn't feel right. But the director yells at Brendon to pump us up, more energy! So he says, "C'mon girls, bring it in!" and we huddle together to na na na. His arm is around my waist. I thought a few of you would appreciate that detail. I was thinking, "Oh God, please don't klutz it up while holding on to me right now, we are very high up."

Then we actually went on a boat ride. We hide to hide during one part. That's when I took this picture:

I felt like such a creepster, but I had to get a COUPLE pictures for you guys or else you'd be all mad-like. Right? RIGHT?!

There was also a point where I had to get in a small, unstable boat with some girls who kept screaming. Shana got to sit next to Brendon, who was not screaming. Lucky.

I think there was another scene to shoot, but I didn't know where Richard was and it was a big freezing, so they let some of us go home.

All in all, it was really fun. I am burned and bruised but it was really cool to be a part of that! I would do it again in a heartbeat.

The video comes out in 3 weeks, watch for it!

Until then, MTV has some pretty sweet photos.

Aww, you are extremely lucky!!
I've only ever had one chance to be in a music video but I had to give it up to give my best friend's a tour of my city. Plus I would have had to fly to the shooting so I didn't want to waste all that money considering you didn't even end up seeing any of the fans properly in the video.
Enough of my ranting now haha, you took some amazing pictures!!
And it's awesome that you got rescued by Patrick, he's a really sweet guy.
