If anyone remembers watching Before They Were Stars, Britney's old vocal coach said that Britney could sing but that she wasn't singing correctly. That was back in the days of when she was on Star Search singing those songs with the long notes. Her voice has never been strong and she's always been very nasal. Now, with training and someone teaching her the correct way to sing, I'm sure it became very clear that the girl didn't have the strongest voice. There were NO long notes or anything considered to be "WOW amazing OMG" notes on her first album. Being that Britney was so used to singing through her nose and was taught professionally to sing correctly (which includes taking breaths at every opportunity) it would be nearly IMPOSSIBLE for her to sing a fast song live because she was always DANCING. But, it does explain why she's so breathy on the slower songs (where she sings them live) because she's only singing the "correct" way or the way she was taught. The other thing that would add to the breathiness is doing slower songs towards the end of a show when she would obviously be tired and out of breath. The more she's breathing due to being out of breath and having to take breaths before each line, the harder it will be for her to sing. Let's also not forget that the girl has been smoking for years. It all makes sense if you really think about it. I'm POSITIVE she stopped her vocal lessons YEARS ago. Add on years of lip synching and auto tune. I don't think she's had the opportunity to be confident enough in her singing or her voice. She so used to it being automatically taken care of. I'm sure if she started her vocal lessons back up, stopped smoking and started dancing regularly, you would notice a MASSIVE difference in her voice.
But that's just my opinion.
