iTunes movie rentals!

Good news for those of us who are too lazy to go to Blockbuster and too commitment-phobic to sign up for Netflix:

Apple is set to break new ground with iTunes, offering movie rentals in a bid to rejuvenate that sluggish part of the otherwise boffo service. Fox and Disney will be announced as partners in a major unveiling by Apple chief Steve Jobs at the annual MacWorld confab on Jan. 14, according to studio sources. Read more...

Lily Allen blog update

Hello Mateys

As you might already know the BBC have been silly enough to to fund my very own TV show . It will be on in the new year on BBC3 and I am very excited about it . There will be good celebrity guests , not rubbish ones and brilliant bands playing brilliant music . And of course a pregnant me trying to present it all . One of the ideas of the show is to publicise bands that have not been on T.V before , so if there are any great bands or acts you know of that you think I should have on then please let me know. More importantly I want you all to be involved in some way ( if you're interested ) . A big part of the show will be based around you guys, so please go and sign up on the show website for chances to get involved , like being in the audience , or sending stuff in for me to talk about , or sending in questions for my guests . I should warn you it looks a bit crap at the moment , but we'll be updating it more and more everyday , and it's going to be amazing soon . Go have a look anyway at bbc.co.uk/lilyallen

Well thats it for 2007, happy christmas you lot , see you soon

I would totally watch Lily Allen's show! I think it'd be cute.

Aaron Rothe leaves Drop Dead, Gorgeous

I will no longer be a part of Drop Dead, Gorgeous. Over the last 2 years I have really figured out what I want to do with music and it differs greatly from ddg. I have reached a point in my life where it's time for me to do what I want and need to do. I am so grateful that I had such an incredible opportunity to travel the world playing music and meet/work with so many amazing people. Read more...

Fergie: Woman of the Year?

Spelling bee champ Fergie Ferg is Blender's Jan/Feb '08 cover girl, proudly toting their "Woman of the Year" title.

I don't read a TON of interviews, but this is the second one I've read this year that made me really like the person being interviewed-- the first being Nicole Richie's Nylon Mag interview.

When she sings 'A girl like me don't stay single for long' and gloats that men 'get their pleasures from my photo,' it can seem like she's full of herself. To her, it's a comedic role. Read more...

Lily Allen pregnant

Well if it isn't the season to get knocked up! While Jamie Lynn Spears clearly stole any thunder Lily Allen might have expected to incite, it's all confirmed and stuff-- she's having a little Chemical kid. And by that I mean the babydaddy is Ed Simons from in The Chemical Brothers.

Whatever happened to people getting frisky in the spring?

Britney bringing the Apocalypse?

Method Man (from the Wu-Tang Clan) thinks that Britney Spears is a sign of the apocalypse.

"The whole music industry is twisted on it's f**king head. And Britney Spears shaved her head - that's how I know the Apocalypse is coming,"

... what? Is it the DayQuil I took this morning that's preventing me from seeing the connection here?

I mean, yes, I agree the music industry is twisted-- but what the hell does Britney's hair have to do with it? Did they take what he was saying out of context and like, splice two unrelated sentences together?

Anyone, anyone, Bueller?

'Juno' music!

There was a phase in my life when I was OBSESSED with the idea of becoming a music supervisor. A music supervisor, for those of you who don't know, basically chooses and clears music for tv & film. And I really really really wanted that gig. Why? Because I like power and influence.

I've liked almost every iPod song. I've been turned onto music through The O.C. and Grey's Anatomy. And right now I'm in love with the Juno Soundtrack.

I know, you're like, how often is Bree gonna pimp this movie? The answer is: every day until you see it.

Anyway.

Track Listing:
1. All I Want Is You - Barry Louis Polisar
2. Rollercoaster (instrumental) - Kimya Dawson
3. A Well Respected Man - The Kinks
4. Dearest - Buddy Holly
5. Up The Spout - Mateo Messina
6. Tire Swing - Kimya Dawson
7. Piazza, New York Catcher - Belle & Sebastian
8. Loose Lips - Kimya Dawson
9. Superstar - Sonic Youth
10. Sleep (instrumental) - Kimya Dawson
11. Expectations - Belle & Sebastian
12. All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople
13. So Nice So Smart - Kimya Dawson
14. Sea of Love - Cat Power
15. Tree Hugger - Antsy Pants
16. I'm Sticking With You - Velvet Underground
17. Anyone Else but You -The Moldy Peaches
18. Vampire - Antsy Pants
19. Anyone Else but You - Juno and Bleeker

I'm honestly not an indie girl-- you know this. If you aren't, either, I recommend you wait 'til AFTER you see the movie to check out the soundtrack. The movie is so effing endearing and the music fits SO perfectly that you'll associate the music with your movie experience. Does that make sense? Warm, fuzzy, happy, meaningful soundtrack.

Read Pitchfork's interview with Ellen Page about her involvement in compiling the soundtrack.

Spice Girls responsible for sluts, binge drinking?

Today in WTF: Fay Weldon of The Daily Mail goes on a long rant about how the Spice clan are responsible for the decline of our culture.

Forgive me for being blunt, but if a generation of our young womanhood has taken to binge drinking, Saturday night sluttishness and "happy-slappings", I blame the Spice Girls.

Think back to those brilliant, suggestive, addictive pop songs of ten years back, when they swept across the nation's playgrounds: "Well it's a Saturday night, You know the feeling is right, Don't you know we'll get so high."

Yeah! Grope, vomit, whoops: aren't we having fun?

Brilliant?! Look, I love me some Spice songs, but I have never heard anyone refer to them as 'Brilliant'. Suggestive? Are you kidding me? They have some of the most generic non-sensical lyrics ever. (Zig-a-zig-ah? Is THAT suggestive?) Addictive? Well, I'll give you that.

Oh and she goes on. And on, and on, and onnnn. Includes some bits about sexual diseases and cotton mills.

It all seemed so empowering at the time: the idea that girls should take charge of their own sexuality. But did anyone stop to think what would happen next? What it did of course was to separate love from sex. The Spice Girls killed romance.

I don't want at all to be forgiven for being blunt-- WHAT is Weldon SMOKING?

So I'm embarrassed for the feminists, clinging on to the dream of a proud, equal, serious society, where justice ruled and lasses didn't throw away their hard-won equality in the pubs and clubs, puking up their resentments on the shoes of paramedics trying to help them out of the gutter. Those little girls who first listened to the Spice Girls ten years ago are the ones who are now running up vast credit card bills on designer shopping they can't afford.

Reading this kind of makes me want to punch someone in the kneecaps, but the sickening sum of it is that she's giving the Spice Girls TOO much credit, and apparently giving NONE to the little girls of yesterday.

Sharing is bad.

Copyright lawyers are trying to lay the smack down on third party sharing sites (SendSpace, MegaUpload, etc).

File-storage sites like Megaupload, Sendspace, and Rapidshare are the "sharing" tool of choice for those people who don't feel like throttling their computer's memory with a BitTorrent client; according to PC World, RapidShare and Megaupload "account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany," and traffic to both of those sites has especially gone up over the past year.

Le sigh. Look, not to be the pirate advocate here, but don't they understand there will ALWAYS be a way? I mean, I guess they have to fight every individual battle, but I would just have trouble in the job satisfaction department knowing that it would... well, never end.

Am I wrong?

The brainz behind 'Juno'

Diablo Cody is a blogger. A blogger who was asked, "Have you ever thought of writing a screenplay?" She hadn't at the time. But she went for it. And damn, I'm so glad she did.

One of the most notable things about the movie Juno (came out in LA and NY yesterday!) is the language. Diablo said that she thinks that a lot of films about adolescents and teens dumb down the dialogue. While she says she didn't crib any specific terms, she's gotten good response so far.

"It was my first screenplay, I actually didn't know much about dialogue, that's why it's probably a little wacky. I really think it was more like a rookie mistake than a stylish decision."

See kids? Don't ever let anyone tell you blogging won't get you anywhere. And don't be afraid of rookie mistakes!

Kanye & Wino ruling the Grammy noms

I'm STOKED that two albums I constantly listen to are leading the pack this year-- Kanye got 8 nods, Amy Winehouse got 6. They're both in the running for album of the year, along with the Foo's "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace."

Rihanna got nominated a bunch (of course), BUT so did Plain White T's and Paramore (even though the Associated Press spelled their band name wrong).

Promising, no?

More deets over herrrrre.

Pimp C died

I'm not going to pretend I'd heard of this guy before today, but I thought you should know (he was only 33!) because he was a strong figure in the hip hop community.

I would pay my respects by busting out my minks, diamonds, and grills-- but I don't own any of that. Instead, we should all refer to eachother as "Pimp [first initial of first name]." That would make me Pimp B.

R.I.P.

Little Miss Christmas at Kitson

Paris is ready to bring on the Holiday cheer. With presents. From Kitson.

If I were one of Paris' friends I would expect something a little larger than, say, a purse or a coffee table book. But hey, what do I know about being friends with a celebutante?

ps. Deceptively Delicious, eh? Wonder what that's about...

Juno review!

I didn't know much about 'Juno' before I was told I'd be covering it, but 'they' said it'd be PERFECT for me.

OMG THEY WERE RIGHT. It is now, without a doubt, one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

Quick version of the sitch: 16 year old Juno (Ellen Page) gets pregnant by Paul Bleeker (Michael Cera). Juno decides to give the baby up for adoption, and she finds the ideal couple (the Loring's, played by Jen Garner and Jason Bateman) in the pennysaver. If you need any other info, you can go on IMDB. Ha.

The movie is REALLY well written (Diablo Cody, ily!). Witty, intelligent, but NOT overdone (see: the last season of Gilmore Girls).

You know what the most amazing part is? I don't think I've ever seen a movie about teen pregnancy that didn't attempt to be preachy, that didn't try to shove a pro-choice or pro-life message down your throat.  In other movies that deal with this topic, the girl is always JUDGED-- she's careless, she's a slut, she's an at risk youth, etc etc. You always suffer through the movie going, "Man, I'm glad I'm not her." But in this movie, well, you'd LOVE to be Juno. At no point do you ever feel sorry for her, because she HANDLES things. She makes decisions. That's what I love about all the characters, really-- when life throws them curveballs they react, but they bounce back. They're empowered, resilient.

It's not predictable. You think you might know how her parents react when she tells them she's pregnant, or how the father of the baby will react-- or even how her best friend will react. But quite honestly, I don't think I've ever seen such believable (yet inspiring) relationships and interactions.

It was cast perfectly. The music is perfect. The dialogue is INCREDIBLE. The setting is perfect. The ending is perfect.

I laughed. I cried. OKAY-- I KNOW that's cliche, but I swear I DID! What weird is I wasn't crying because something was sad. I actually... HAPPY cried. Now, I'm not saying I have a black little heart, but I'm not easily moved. I think maybe the last time I cried was when I saw Meet Joe Black.  And the series finale of The O.C. Just kidding.

You HAVE to see it. That's my conclusion. On a scale of 1-5 stars, it gets five. I'm going to see it again. And you're coming with me.

Any questions?
