They Are Family: The Hush Sound as Decaydance's Congenial Children

The Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen family are TIGHT. This year they're ruling three-fourths of the Honda Civic Tour, they constantly make cameos on each others' albums, and a group of them even appeared together on MTV's "TRL" earlier this month.

So how does the rock version of Def Jam make it work? Does recently hitched Decaydance patriarch Pete Wentz send them away to summer camp and make them do trust falls? Nah, he just sends them on tour together and the bonding experiences bloom themselves. Greta Salpeter of The Hush Sound chatted with us about it when she called Buzznet on Friday.

"We play a lot of Hacky Sack — at least on this tour," she said. "Panic at the Disco started it — they started with this big circle and all of us we're kinda like, 'Oh, who are these hippies?' And then we started playing, and we bought our own. Phantom Planet is playing now, too."

As far advice given to her band by "family relatives," Greta said, "When Patrick [Stump] produced our record, we became better friends with him and he kind of gave us a clue into how to make this all work — how to have fun and still stay true to what you want to do."

Just like Panic rubbed off on The Hush Sound while on tour, the latter group might have some influence on its own underlings of sorts — whether either band likes it or not. This summer, The Hush Sound will tour with Decaydance newcomers The Cab, and although the Hushies are three albums and several tours their senior, Greta doesn't see her band in a position to be mentoring anyone just yet, "other than just to relax, have fun, and write music that you want to write."

While that attitude might be shared by many bands on the Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen roster, what sets The Hush Sound slightly apart from their label-mates is that the group's front-person has yet to emerge. They consciously try to keep it equal, since writing songs is a joint effort. "If one of us wrote all the songs, then that person would become the frontman, without really trying," Salpeter said.

Speaking of writing, although Goodbye Blues is still fresh in fans' heads, the band is writing while on tour as well. It's just have a little less to work with in this situation —"I was just jokingly thinking earlier that none of my songs on the next record are going to have piano on them, because the only thing I can write on when we're on tour is a guitar," Salpeter said.

It's not just The Hush Sound who are doing the impressing, though — fans are certainly doing their part to make the bands' jaws drop: "We've met a lot of kids on this tour who have tattoos. One girl came and had us write, 'Don't wake me up, I'm still dreaming,' in all of our handwriting — and then she's getting OUR handwriting tattooed on her, which is pretty insane."

Read more about The Hush Sound's next video and Greta's collaboration plans in the interview we posted Friday!

Hush Sound Plan New Video; Greta to Team With Forgive Durden Frontman

Earlier this week, The Hush Sound announced their plans to "Dance Across the Country" with The Cab this summer — and guess what? All Time Low and Gabe Saporta 'Get It Together'

In news I am sort of ambivalent about posting, All Time Low and Gabe Saporta performed a MIDTOWN song at last night's show in Glasgow, Scotland. And there's a rumor that they're going to play FOUR Midtown songs at tonight's show, according to AbsolutePunk.

For those of you who weren't around (or paying attention, tsk tsk) in Gabe's pre-Cobra Starship days, Midtown were an awesome, awesome band. Some commenters over at AP think the "Gabetown Low" performance was a slap in the face to the other members of Midtown. Me? I just have one thing to say to Mr. Saporta, and I will do it with this video:

Translation: stop being a tease and just reunite. And you, Buzzneters? What do you think?

P.S. How jealous are you that Shiona is witnessing Gabetown Low?

UPDATE from Shiona: Gabetown-low played a short set before the Movielife tonight in london. Apparently it was droolworthy, and one of her friends may have succeeded in recording the whole set.

Oh, we can only hope.

The Used Hit SoCal With Low-Pro, High-Energy Set

IRVINE, California — When I mentioned to my friends that I was going to see The Used, more than half the responses were, "Oh, they're still a band?"

Yeah, so, The Used have dropped off the mainstream radar a bit. Their most recent release is an iTunes-only EP, Shallow Believer. I'm kind of in love with the song "Sun Comes Up" from that disc, but they didn't play it. Oh well. They did play "Sick Hearts," though, and that was pretty solid. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I watched Straylight Run open, and they were just about as exciting as I remember them being before—which means, um, not at all. They opened with "Existentialism on Prom Night," the only song I happen to know, but it just didn't get me pumped. Straylight Run are quality LJ-ing music, nothing I can devote my full attention to. At the urging of Brianfax, I took video footage of them playing "Hands in the Sky (Big Shot)."

After Straylight, I wandered back up to the photo pit to wait. There were cardboard cutouts of various presidential wannabes (and Dubya, and a few soliders) being assembled. I didn't really get their purpose, other than Bert McCracken imitating a girl voice and playing with the Hillary one (watch that video here). Is there political subtext in the lyrics that I just never picked up on?

I took a picture of the set list before they started. It was sort of a Used "greatest hits" show.

McCracken opened the show by taking a swig of water (or was it beer?) and spraying it all over the front row. That move must've taken practice, because the picture I took looks just like it was raining — kind of gross and awesome at the same time.

After the photogs were ushered away from the front of the stage, Bert shouted, "Who wants to dance?!" and then pulled up a bunch of girls onstage. He pulled up one girl onto his little light box and basically made out with her. She looked slightly horrified.

Think about it — of all the lead singers in all the rock bands in the same genre, is there anyone you'd be MORE aversive about making out with than him? I'm just sayin'.

As if you couldn't tell by the photos I took, I was favoring Quinn Allman just a tad. Oh, and? He smiled at me. Definitely, unquestionably, ME — my heart nearly stopped beating. /end fangirlness.

They played my absolute favorite Used song ("Taste of Ink"), brought openers Street Drum Corps out for a song, and also brought out drummer Dan Whiteside's father, Bill Whiteside, to play guitar on one song. Cute.
